Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
